چکیده

Fourteen psychophysiological indices of response to hyperventilation and breathholding and to discrimination-conflict stress were combined with measures of neuroticism, motivation, and aptitude to form a correlation matrix including adjustment ratings obtained from 200 men during two successive cruises aboard a nuclear submarine. Patterns of psychophysiological indicators with adjustment criteria were identified by factor variables resulted in Multiple R's ranging from .40 to . 62. For the purpose of communication, these factors were labeled Limited Adjustment Potential, Optimal Adjustment Potential, Autonomie Resiliency, Autonomie Feedback, and Stress Responsivity. The structure of the factors suggested somatopsychological dimensions of use in personality assessment especially when selection of men for hazardous duty is involved.

Studies of Ciliary Mucus Transport in a Closed Cabin Atmosphere

In an attempt to determine what effect, if any, a sealed cabin atmosphere might have on living tissue, observations of frog tissue were made during a routine patrol of a Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) submarine. Ciliary mucus flow rates were determined in the esophageal tissue of frogs, since results with these tissues have proved comparable to mammalian respiratory cilia. Bottles of surface air...

Calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus metabolism, and parathyroid-calcitonin function during prolonged exposure to elevated CO2 concentrations on submarines.

Studies of calcium and phosphorus metabolism and acid-base balance were carried out on three Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) submarines during prolonged exposure to elevated concentrations of CO2. The average CO2 concentration in the submarine atmosphere during patrols ranged from 0.85% to 1% CO2. In the three studies, in which 9--15 subjects participated, the urinary excretion of calcium and pho...

Nuclear weapons proliferation, medicine's supreme challenge.

Nuclear proliferation, because of its ability to threaten human survival, is fast coming to overshadow all other global issues.1-7 When the renowned explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau addressed the UN General Assembly in 1976 he observed that atomic power had "reshaped what we may fear, what we may dream, how we live and how we may die." He was emphasising as many before him had done that since Aug...
